OUTING
WAS NO TRIVIAL PURSUIT
By Bob Riepenhoff - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico - Every
game fish is a prize, but in the world of saltwater fishing, there
is something special about billfish in general, and marlin in particular.
The marlin is the top saltwater game fish, Gary Wroblewski told
me. Its the ultimate trophy to pursue.
Wroblewski and I have hunted and fished together for years. Last
year, he started Bluewater Outfitters, a business offering lodging
and fishing at the southern tip of Mexicos Baja Peninsula.
On a recent fishing trip to the area, we spent two of our six days
in pursuit of marlin.
For our first marlin hunt, onboard
the Guerita II charter, we motored 25 miles southeast of Cabo into
the Sea of Cortes to an area known as Gordo Banks,
a series of reefs and humps where the bottom comes up from about
2,000 feet to as shallow as 200 feet, creating structure that attracts
big fish.
The billfish category includes several species which all have long
bills or spears that they use to slash at and stun their prey before
grabbing it with their jaws. The billfish in the waters around Cabo
include sailfish, plus black, blue and striped marlin.
The hierarchy is in the size, said Wroblewski, of Eagle. Sailfish
average 75 to 125 pounds, striped marlin go from 75 to 250 pounds
and blacks and blues go from 150 pounds to in excess of 700 pounds.
In Wisconsin terms, the marlin is like the musky of saltwater fishing.
Theyre very difficult to find and catch, Wroblewski said. Its even
more difficult to get them to bite. And, once they're hooked, they're
very difficult to land. Its a challenge that a lot of guys pursue.
When you accomplish it, you've done something very special.--
